Food Photography Styling – Hummus
As a food photographer, I know that styling decisions can make or break a shot. Recently, I had the opportunity to shoot a hummus dish and wanted to share the styling decisions I made to create a beautiful and inviting image.
Backdrop & Props
To convey the calm, dreamy mood of the image, I chose to use brown, white, and neutral props. I also incorporated vintage wine glasses, which added a touch of elegance and sophistication to the shot. By using a mix of props in a similar color palette, I was able to create a cohesive look that didn’t distract from the main subject.
Lighting
For this shot, I used side lighting to capture the hummus dish. Side lighting is perfect for creating shadows and highlights, which can add depth and dimension to the image. By playing with the direction and intensity of the light, I was able to highlight the texture and colors of the hummus, making it look even more delicious. And after all that’s my goal with each food styling choice I make!
Angle of View
I chose an overhead angle to show all the gorgeous textures of the hummus and the mixed crisp breads. This angle allowed me to capture the dish from above, which gave the viewer a clear view of the different elements in the dish. Additionally, this angle made it easier for me to create a balanced composition.
Food Styling & Composition
Shapes and Repetition – When it comes to composition, I focused on using shapes and repetition to create a harmonious image. I used round serving trays and dishes for everything in this shoot, which complemented each other and the round shape of the breads. To break the repetition, I created some lines and curves through the hummus, which added visual interest. Additionally, I consciously used two different colored breads around the hummus to add another layer of interest.
Framing and Placement – To frame the main subject, I used small plates and wine glasses, which I placed on the outer corners of my frame. This created a frame within a frame effect, which draws the viewer’s eye towards the main hummus platter. By using props to frame the main subject, I was able to add depth and dimension to the image.
In conclusion, when it comes to food photography, styling decisions are key. By carefully choosing props, lighting, angle of view, composition, framing, and placement, I was able to create a beautiful and inviting hummus shot. I hope these tips will help you create stunning food images too!
